HERTZ MONO is an audiovisual type system, based on a generative design process. It is is based on the principle of translation or encryption of auditory information into a visual sign system. The audio track of each character is read into an algorithm, which analyzes its frequencies and transfers the output onto a typographic grid. As a result each character of HZ MONO is determined by its audio frequencies.
Hertz (Hz) is the SI unit of frequency and at the same time the name giver of HZ MONO. Depending on the frequency the four font styles WHITENOISE, QUIET, MODERATE and LOUD arise as analogous to classic names. HZ MONO is a monospace font with identical character width and height. Each font style consists of Latin capital letters, numerals, punctuation marks and a basic repertoire of symbols.
